HISTORY
Academic Origins
CAPCIS has strong academic origins within the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology, UMIST, a hub of materials science, engineering and teaching since 1957. In 1972, UMIST created a separate academic department, the Corrosion and Protection Centre, and in 1973 CAPCIS was spun off as an independent organisation to provide an industrial focus for the knowledge and technology emerging from the University; and to deliver high quality, commercial consultancy and specialist testing services.

Reputation and Credibility
CAPCIS has grown and developed over 30 years, recruiting both from academia and industry, building core competencies in corrosion control and materials behaviour and developing specialised test facilities to support the evaluation of materials performance in aggressive operating environments. The company has established an enviable reputation worldwide for its fundamental understanding, specialist expertise and advanced testing capabilities, further augmented through its strong links with Universities.

Refocused for the 21st Century
Over the past 5 years, CAPCIS has grown significantly through both service and geographic diversification and aligned its services to address the key integrity and asset management challenges facing major industry today. The company has built on its core technical expertise through the recruitment of greater operational experience and the development of new technologies. In 2007, CAPCIS is recognised globally as an independent centre of excellence in many aspects of materials performance, integrity assurance, corrosion control and operational improvement, serving major companies across the Oil and Gas and Utility Infrastructure sectors. Now under new ownership, CAPCIS is part of the Intertek Group (a global leader in testing, inspection and certification of systems, products and commodities), which provides CAPCIS with numerous opportunities for further growth.
