MATERIALS PERFORMANCE
CAPCIS is routinely required to evaluate materials in highly aggressive environments. We operate the largest independent high-pressure test facility in Europe with a variety of autoclaves operating up to pressures in excess of 1000 bar. Where appropriate, the effects of flow can be simulated in either rotating cage, cylinder or flow loop apparatus.
Typical projects include:
- Assessment of environmental cracking
- Sour service materials evaluation
- Evaluation of the effects of rapid decompression on coatings and non-metallic materials
- Materials performance assessment in simulated service environments.
CAPCIS has a dedicated 500 sq m sour service testing
laboratory with a 4 tonne capacity crane
and catalytic oxidation unit that can safely dispose
of up to 10 litres per hour of pure H2S.
Both small and large-scale tests are carried out, including:
- Corrosion fatigue testing in sour environments
- HIC and SSCC
- Full ring tests to OTI 95 635
- Slow strain rate tests
- Constant load tensile tests
Evaluation of coatings and non-metallic materials is also an important part of CAPCIS specialised testing services. Our work for a number of industrial sectors has covered the spectrum of polymeric materials – elastomers, thermoplastics and thermosets, including composites – for a variety of applications. The autoclave facility is often required to assess performance under simulated service conditions and the effects of rapid decompression can be evaluated. Environmental weathering equipment is also available. Advanced techniques have been developed to enable the assessment of cathodic disbondment properties at elevated temperatures.
