ASSESSMENT OF REMAINING LIFE Direct
condition assessments through thickness measurements and
coatings grading can confirm the current state of an asset
but without the context of an operation history and future
use can be of little value in confirming future life.
In this case the asset owner was faced with large 70 year
old cast iron water tanks that were integral to his process
but very disruptive to inspect. CAPCIS designed an uncertainty
based degradation model that calculated probability distributions
for internal and external corrosion based on a knowledge
of the construction, operating environments, maintenance
history and the behaviour of the materials used. Initial
corrosion performance data was taken from literature and
the model used to facilitate a workshop discussion with
operations, maintenance and contractor staff that enabled
direct input into the model, the identification of sensitive
parameters and the further work required to close these
down. At this early stage the future life predictions
gave the Owner sufficient confidence to move forward with
his plans .
