MATERIALS ASSESSMENT FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT
Wastewater treatment works can present aggressive environments for construction materials leading, in some cases, to expensive mitigation through over specification of higher-grade materials or degradation problems from under specification and process change. Material choice is driven by uncertainties in the real environment; in this particular case the asset owner had experienced severe corrosion problems on the existing ageing plant and was facing the higher capital cost of refurbishment in high-grade stainless steel materials. A direct materials evaluation programme was undertaken using a number of candidate materials exposed to the real process environment.
The selected materials were fabricated into corrosion probes and monitored continuously alongside process parameters to enable a performance assessment to be achieved in a short timescale. The work required a combination of corrosion consultancy, corrosion monitoring and corrosion testing skills and was resourced from across the CAPCIS skill base.
The benefit to the Client was a significant £M cost saving on his refurbishment works programmes across multiple sites.
