BONGA
The Bonga field is located 120km south west of the Niger Delta and is the first deepwater development for Shell and Nigeria. The 300,000 tonne FPSO has 15 storage tanks capable of holding 324,233m³ of oil. Oil is exported at a rate of 1 million barrels per day via tankers, and gas is exported via a pipeline to the Bonny Island facilities.
CAPCIS led a combined team of CAPCIS and SGS personnel to develop a fully integrated Corrosion Management System for the Bonga FPSO. This itself is another first, as the deliverable covers all parts of the Bonga asset infrastructure from down-hole systems, sub-sea production, hull and marine, topsides process and export systems.
The Corrosion Management System was developed during the design and fabrication stage of the project, to ensure that systems were up and running for first oil. The main deliverables of the project were:
- A Risk Based Corrosion Management Strategy highlighting the process monitoring, sampling, inspection and corrosion monitoring requirements based on the Corrosion Risk Assessment.
- A Corrosion Management Manual outlining how the corrosion management process should be operated; it details roles and responsibilities, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), communication requirements and storage of data issues in addition to detailing the corrosion threats and mitigation measures for each sub-asset of the Bonga facility.
- An Integrity Management Database containing base-line assessments; schedules for inspection requirements, corrosion monitoring and appropriate process sampling and analysis; and the functionality to record inspection data as routine inspections are undertaken over the life of the facility. The integrity management tool PACER TM has been populated for Bonga, which will enable common systems to be used for Shell Nigeria onshore and offshore assets.
To maintain continuity and to ensure integration into routine platform
maintenance activities during the early stages of commissioning,
CAPCIS seconded a Corrosion Engineer to work within the
Bonga Maintenance team with specific responsibility for
the implementation of the Corrosion Management System
and provision of on-site Corrosion Management support.
