CHALLENGE: STRAY CURRENT MANAGEMENT
The management of stray current leakage from d.c. electrified railways is an asset integrity and public safety issue for all parties involved. Stray current is becoming increasingly important, a recent US study highlighted a $500 million annual cost to the economy from stray current management and its link with electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues and with the electrical safety of the systems.

CAPCIS provides a total stray current management support package to all parties supported by an industry reputation and credibility built on a successful 15 year track record. In taking the lead on Stray Current, our role is to ensure integration across system design and the management of multi-party interfaces from Transport Authorities, Promoters and Clients, to Utilities, Concessionaires, Construction Contractors and O&M Contractors.

CAPCIS Services include:

  • Asset Integrity Strategy and Policy Development
  • Specifications, Codes of Practice
  • Stray Current Risk Assessments – risk to railway, risk to others, risk from others
  • Design Assessments and Design Review
  • Design Development – concept to detail
  • Modelling Stray Current Performance and Interaction
  • Stray Current Monitoring Design (Rail Operators and Utility Companies)

Our strength is in our ability to forge long term relationships with our clients and all external parties involved. Our capability is underpinned by electrical engineering input from our sister company IPSA Power (update link to TNEI Services) and support from the Manchester Centre for Electrical Energy. We are supporting development work on dynamic stray current modelling to further enhance our capability and working with our corrosion monitoring team to develop innovative monitoring solutions in support of stray current applications.
